The following list contains terms and definitions for both Damstra Safety and OHS best practice. Some will be unique to Damstra Safety, others will be standard OHS terms that are used within your Damstra Safety system.
This article is a living document and will change along with our systems and industry definitions.

Accident: [OHS]An event that (a) causes any person to be harmed; or (b) in different circumstances, might have caused any person to be harmed. [Worksafe NZ] An incident where injury or ill health occurs [ISO 45001] |
Corrective Action: [OHS & Damstra Safety]An action to eliminate the cause(s) of a nonconformity or an incident and to prevent recurrence. |
Feedback: [OHS & Damstra Safety]Any feedback, positive, negative or neutral that you might wish to send to your Health and Safety team. |
Hazard: [OHS & Damstra Safety]Any Source with a potential to cause injury or ill health. |
Ill-Health (Illness): [OHS & Damstra Safety]A departure from a state of health, A disease or sickness. The adverse effect on the physical, mental or cognitive condition of a person. |
Incident (Event): [OHS & Damstra Safety]Any unplanned event not resulting in, but having the potential for injury, ill health, damage or other loss. [Worksafe NZ] |
Injury: [OHS & Damstra Safety]Tissue damage resulting from either the acute transfer to individuals of physical energy (Kinetic or Mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical or radiant) or the sudden interruption of normal energy patterns to maintain life processes. [ Worksafe NZ] |
Near Miss: [OHS & Damstra Safety]An unplanned or uncontrolled event that did not result in injury, illness or damage but had the potential to do so. [Worksafe NZ] |
Observation: [OHS & Damstra Safety]Not safe: The observation of something that did not result in injury, illness or damage but had the potential to do so. Safe: The observation of a positive or proactive activity that promotes or displays health and safety best practice. |
Organisation: [Damstra Safety]The entity that ‘owns’ the instance of Damstra Safety is typically described as the Organisation in Vault and in supporting videos. |
Other Person Type: [Damstra Safety]Workers that belong to one of the two customisable Worker types (e.g. Student, Volunteer). |
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): [Damstra Safety]Refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments / equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. |
Position: [Damstra Safety]Term used to mean role or job title. |
Register: [Damstra Safety]Any Database displayed as a table. |
Risk: [OHS & Damstra Safety]Anything that has the potential to cause injury, ill-health or damage. The possibility that harm (death, injury or illness) might occur when exposed to a hazard. [Safe Work AU] Is the risk of uncertainty. It is often expressed in terms of a combination of the consequences of an event and the associated likelihood of occurrence [ISO 45001] |
Short Form: [Damstra Safety]A form which collects the minimum amount of information required to add an entry to a database. |
Smart Search: [Damstra Safety]Describes the ‘type ahead’ function whereby filtered database results are returned with each keystroke. |
Supervisor: [Damstra Safety]The person responsible for the Health & Safety of a Worker. Not necessarily that person’s line manager. |
Third Party / Visitor: [Damstra Safety]A person who is external to the Organisation and any Contractor Companies. Typically added to Damstra Safety when involved in some kind of Event (Incident). |
User: [Damstra Safety]A person (of any type) that has login access to Damstra Safety. |
